Backlog #1: New Year, Same You (Unset Lyric)

New year. Same you.
Same brown hair
Same old shoes.
Gray suede broken in
By summer rain and the winter wind
New Year. Same you.
New year. Same you.
Same old place.
Same short fuse.
You fizzle first, and then you smoke
I try to leave but, and like Macy I try and then I choke.
New year. Same you.

Yes, I choke and trip
On every word I didn't say
I stop and slip
On every good time in my way
I lose my my grip
On everything I ever wanted us to be
I lose my grip
On every version you'll never see
Of me.

Me in your kitchen
Cooking your dinner
Me and your children
Our little all star winners
Me in the office
Pulling one last string
Me at the alter,
holding your ring

New  year. Same you.
New year. Same you.
New year.. Same you.
But it’s a different me
It’s a different me
New Me. Same. You.

New Year. Same you.
Sometimes to win
You have to lose
I’ve got one less body in my bed

I’ve got one less ghost dancing around inside my head

And one less thing that I wish I said
New me. Same you.
New me. Same you.

Backlog is a collection of unset lyrics, cut monologues, poems, and essays. It is the product of late nights, early mornings. Of train rides. Of incipient rage. These are the seeds of larger things in my work that deserve their time to blossom as well. Thank you for taking the time to read through these works as I roll them out. I offer them to you to use as you wish, bearing in mind that my finger prints are already here. I look forward to adding yours, too.
